‘Time-bomb’ of chronic disease in Kenya

Rise of non-communicable diseases placing strain on health facilities

The World Health Organisation has warned that the adoption of unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary urban lifestyles with no regular physical exercise will see non-communicable diseases such a hypertension, obesity and diabetes emerge as the major killers ahead of HIV/AIDS and malaria in Kenya.

Dr David Okello, WHO Representative in Kenya, said ‘There are serious health challenges brought by rapid urbanisation that should see health put at the heart of urban policy.’ His comment was made while marking the World Health Day on April 7 in Nairobi.

The rise in non-communicable diseases is putting an additional strain on the country’s public hospitals and in the future is likely to exert more pressure on the country’s public health facilities, which currently lack drugs, nurses and doctors.
