Global Nutrition Transition Conference

Obesity prevention central focus

The Global Nutrition Transition Conference held in Orlando this month brought together eminent physicians and nutrition scientists to discuss emerging trends and grassroots solutions to the global epidemic obesity epidemic, driven by the nutrition transition. The focus was very much on prevention by employing approaches to encourage balanced nutrition and diet, and education about how to live healthy active lives. The Global Nutrition Transition Conference also presented insights into combating non-communicable diseases, which are now a universal concern.

Dr Linong Ji of Peking University in China, speaking at the conference, highlighted the worrying trend of increasing rates of obesity: ‘While America and Mexico currently have the highest rates of overweight and obesity worldwide, rates are skyrocketing in Asia … China has seen its obesity rates nearly double since 1989, and 20 per cent of India’s citizens are overweight or obese,”
