Commonwealth call for NCD action

Highlights the importance of NCDs for development

At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad & Tobago on 29 November, the leaders of 54 countries (representing a third of the world’s population) produced a statement (click here >>) on Commonwealth action on non-communicable diseases. The statement affirmed a commitment among the countries to address NCDs and increase their ability ‘to respond to this emerging health crisis’.

In addition, the Statement highlighted a need for wider action on NCDs as an important part of development, including calls for:

  • the Millennium Development Goals Review Summit at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2010 to discuss the inclusion of indicators on NCDs in the core MDG monitoring and evaluation system, to monitor the magnitude, trend and socio-economic impact of the diseases;
  • the inclusion of NCDs in other global discussions on development, such as those of the ECOSOC 2010 Coordination Segment; and
  • a UN General Assembly special session to be held on NCDs in September 2011, ‘in order to develop strategic responses to these diseases and their repercussions’.
