UK diabetes rates ‘mushrooming’

Surge in hospital admittances related to diabetes putting strain on NHS

A study has found that the UK’s obesity crisis is putting the NHS under increased pressure due to the number of patients admitted with diabetes-related health conditions. Professor Anthony Barnett, clinical director for diabetes at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in Birmingham said that rates of diabetes were ‘mushrooming’ due to lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol abuse and poor diet.

A diabetes audit of 200 NHS hospitals led by Dr Rowan Hillson found disparity between the number of people diagnosed with the disease, and the number of hospital patients with the disease.  4 per cent of the population is diagnosed with diabetes, whereas 20 per cent of those on hospital wards had diabetes.
