Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation

New national US coalition to reduce obesity

More than 40 retailers, NGOs and food and drink manufacturers in the United States have launched the ‘Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation’, described as ‘a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce obesity – especially childhood obesity – by 2015’. It seeks to bring the organisations to work together to make a difference, particularly focusing on ‘better energy balance between calories in and calories out’, in the workplace (reaching employees), schools (reaching children) and the marketplace (reaching consumers). Members of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation have so far committed $20 million to the initiative.

The 40 members represent a wide variety of organisations and businesses, and include: the American Dietetic Association Foundation, General Mills, Inc., Girl Scouts of the USA, Kelloggs, the National Wildlife Federation, PepsiCo, Inc., Safeway Inc., The Coca-Cola Company and The Hershey Company.
