WHO and IOC: work together on NCD risk

International Olympic Committee will increase reach of WHO

In a memorandum of understanding, signed on 21 July 2010, the International Olympic Committee and World Health Organisation have agreed to work at international and country level to promote physical activity and policies that help people reduce their risk of NCDs. IOC President Jacques Rogge commented that ‘The IOC and the WHO are both eager to promote healthy lifestyles and grassroots sports activities, and today’s agreement is an important step to better form synergies between our various initiatives.’ The WHO’s Director-General, Margaret Chan, agreed that ‘This agreement with the International Olympic Committee will help increase our ability and reach’ in addressing NCDs.

The two organisations will establish a group to meet at least once a year to develop and maintain the co-operation.
