ProActive activity promotion

Participants increased energy expenditure

A study was conducted by Rebecca Simmons et al. to identify predictors of change in objectively measured physical activity over 12 months in the ProActive cohort to improve understanding of factors influencing change in physical activity. ProActive is a physical activity promotion trial that took place in Eastern England between 1995 and 2004. The study measured the physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) of the offspring of individuals with type 2 diabetes. PAEE was measured using heart-rate monitoring, fitness, and anthropometric and biochemical status

The study found that ProActive participants significantly increased their PAEE by 0.6kj/min over the course of a year, which is equivalent to roughly 20 minutes brisk walking a day. Factors that predicted an increase in PAEE were male sex and higher fitness at baseline, and no significant associations were found for other variables such as demographic, clinical, psychosocial and behavioural predictors.
