Domestic violence

Are you or someone you care about involved in an abusive relationship? Abusive relationships can involve an imbalance of power and control.

Abusers can use threats, intimidation, hurtful words and violence.

COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown has resulted in an increase of domestic violence incidents.

The organisations highlighted in this section can offer survivors confidential advice, guidance and support. There are also resources available for abusers who want to change.

Cavell Nurses' Trust

What is it?

Cavell Nurses’ Trust is the charity supporting UK nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants, both working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship often due to illness, disability, older age, domestic abuse and the impact of the coronavirus.

From simple, essential support like money to repair a broken cooker or boiler, to vital life-changing aid like helping a family flee their home due to domestic abuse, Cavell Nurses’ Trust is here to help. The numbers seeking our help increase year on year so it’s clear there’s a need for nursing professionals to access our support.

Refuge: support for individuals experiencing domestic abuse

What is it?

At Refuge, we support thousands of women and children who turn to us when they’re trying to escape domestic abuse. We believe that everybody has the right to a life free from violence. Our professional staff are highly trained to work with everyone experiencing domestic abuse, including heterosexual, gay, bisexual and transgender men.

Supporting those who have experienced violence and abuse is at the core of everything we do. No matter what your experience – domestic violence, sexual violence, ‘honour’ based violence, forced marriage, FGM, human trafficking or modern slavery – we are here to support you.

We run a range of specialist services to help survivors access safety and rebuild their lives. We understand each person’s circumstances and needs are different and that survivors need different services at different times. Our expert staff work closely, and confidentially, with every individual to develop a bespoke support plan. If a woman is not sure what service she wants or needs, Refuge will support her to explore her options.
