Healthy Weight Initiative for Nurses (WIN.)

Designed by nurses, for nurses.

Are you a nurse? We’re pleased to collaborate with global health and employment services provider MAXIMUS to launch NURSING YOU, a weight management app designed by nurses, for nurses.

Now in its second year and building on MAXIMUS’ digital wellbeing platform, NURSING YOU enables nurses to reflect on how they make decisions at work and to identify wellbeing goals, such as how to help maintain a healthier weight or drink more water. The app includes wellbeing assessments, tracking functions, and recipes and health tips.

For 2019, C3 and MAXIMUS are adding one-to-one health coaching. This unique 12-week behavioural change programme will better support nurses on their weight-loss journey, as health coaches help decide on goals, track progress and help nurses push through relapses.

We’ve made this app exclusively available for nurses to ensure the best experience for you. Send us a short note at nursingyou@c3health.org saying you’re a nurse who’s interested in using the app and we’ll reply promptly with the access code. Then head over to https://nursingyou.wellbeingzone.co.uk/ to download the app and start your NURSING YOU journey.

What is the Healthy Weight Initiative for Nurses (WIN.)?

From 2015 to 2017, the Healthy Weight Initiative for Nurses (WIN.) worked with registered nurses in England who are obese to design initiatives to help nurses to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

WIN. was a collaboration between C3 Collaborating for Health, London South Bank University, the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Nursing Foundation and the Burdett Trust for Nursing.

Why does being a healthy weight matter?

  • For own health
  • To do parts of the job (such as bending and lifting) more easily
  • To be more credible when giving public health messages

Why did we start WIN.?

WIN. embarked on a journey to see if we could help nurses maintain a healthy weight. We knew this would be a sensitive subject with many complicating factors, but:

  • we believed it was such an important issue that something needed to be done;
  • there is a strong expectation for nurses to model healthy behaviours and this can be made easier by nurses’ workplaces offering desirable and feasible interventions; and
  • we wanted to listen and hear what nurses had to say about their own self-care and weight management.

Together with nurses, we designed interventions that nurses thought would be helpful, and implemented and evaluated them.

What did WIN. accomplish?

We completed a prevalence study of obesity in nurses, an evidence review of workplace interventions to help nurses maintain a healthy weight, a survey of hundreds of nurses, and held focus groups and workshops across the country.

Together with nurses around England, we designed interventions that nurses thought would be helpful to meet the needs of those who want to reach and maintain a healthy weight. This included an interactive weight management tool, NURSING YOU. In February 2018, NURSING YOU was launched as an app through partnership with MAXIMUS UK.
