Advisory group

Putting people at the heart of prevention work is imperative if we are to identify solutions that really do make it easier for everyone to live healthy lives. That’s why C3 organises advisory groups to inform its projects and programme areas.

In addition to subject matter experts, the groups are made up of the people whose voices are often overlooked – the ones who actually are impacted by chronic disease and who know best what they need in order to live healthy lives.

Selena is a burns and plastic reconstruction specialist nurse, and was one of C3’s Healthy Weight Initiative for Nurses (WIN.)’s most active participants [Read Selena’s story]. Selena has been involved from the start of WIN. to ensure that the whole project was suitable for nurses and led by nurses. WIN. made her more aware of the opportunities that exist for nurses whilst highlighting how nursing impacts on their everyday lives, and how nurses fail to look after themselves whilst looking after others.

Inspired by her participation, Selena lost some considerable weight, around 4 stone (25 kg); started running – around 5k three times a week, and ran a 10k in February 2018; and started dancing and progressed to dancing in competitions. She also feels much more confident to tackle the issues of weight management with her patients, and her ward now has a team that run regularly both for fun and charity.

Selena continues to advise and inspire C3 through her work taking NURSING YOU forward (which was piloted as an intervention in the WIN. project).

Why NURSING YOU?

What inspired you to become a NURSING YOU advisor?

‘Being an overweight nurse I felt that WIN. and NURSING YOU may help me tackle my own obesity issue in a way that worked with my job and its associated issues. I have found the whole experience empowering.’

What do you hope to see as a result of your advisory role?

‘I hope that WIN. helps nurses tackle their weight demons; I hope it helps them feel empowered to take their body back and feel in control. Weight loss is an emotive subject. With the added issues of being a nurse there is no easy solution but having options that are simple and effective are a good starting point.’

Jeanne Davey is a service manager for Hounslow & Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust.

Heather Hanna is an experienced paediatric nurse with 20 years experience in Neonatal Intensive Care and 10 years of working in paediatric clinical research in allergy and infectious diseases. She has a master’s degree focused in allergy from Imperial College London and currently works as a clinical teaching fellow on the MSc’s in allergy and paediatrics and child health at Imperial College London.

Why NURSING YOU?

What inspired you to become a NURSING YOU advisor?

‘I was part of the team that developed “Nursing You” [as the interactive pdf] and I felt that we needed to develop it further into an App as Nurses are very time-poor and need as many easy-to-access platforms as possible to make using “Nursing You” as quick and easy as possible. The phone reminders and prompts mean that you can tuck it into your busy day and ensure that you look after yourself, as a nurse and a person, giving yourself the same excellent care that you give your patients, every day.’

What do you hope to see as a result of your advisory role?

‘I want to see Nurses look after their physical, mental and social health and to see our profession thrive in a very demanding and intense job. To be a part of that process is very important to me, as we do tend to put our needs and our self-care last. Nurses are amazing at caring, so I want to see us turn some of that caring process on ourselves.’

Nurse Consultant in Cardiovascular Disease

Joanne Loades is a cardiovascular specialist nurse and has worked in a variety of roles across primary and secondary care over the past 20 years. In 2010 she set up in business as an independent nurse consultant delivering clinical, educational and consultancy services to a number of NHS, charitable and commercial organisations across the UK. As a former Clinical Lead for Education for Health, Joanne passionately believes in educating healthcare professionals to improve patient care.

Joanne held the position of Chair of the Cardiovascular Nurse Leaders’ (CVNL) Forum of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society from 2010 – 2012 and is the current Chair of the Nurses and Allied Health Professionals Working Party of The British and Irish Hypertension Society. She is also an Education Committee member of The European Society of Cardiology Council for Cardiovascular Nurses and Allied Health Professionals. Joanne sits on the Editorial Board of the General Practice Nurse (GPN) journal and has authored many publications in the nursing and cardiology press both in the UK and internationally. In addition to advising on C3’s NURSING YOU, Joanne is currently providing clinical project management support to The Breckland Alliance, a National Association of Primary Care Rapid Test Site for the Primary Care Home programme and is a Specialist Advisor to the Care Quality Commission.

Why NURSING YOU?

What inspired you to become a NURSING YOU advisor?

‘I thought it was a fantastic move to get Nursing You out in an app, so many people use them now and to make this accessible to as many people as possible, and as user friendly as possible is key to its success.’

What do you hope to see as a result of your advisory role?

‘As a nurse myself I hope to be able to provide honest and realistic feedback to help make this app as useful as possible and encourage more nurses to give it a go!’
