Collaborating to Strengthen Primary Care

Creating effective multi-sector partnerships to tackle non-communicable diseases in resource-poor settings

Which kinds of partnership are most effective for organisations focused on front-line healthcare systems? And what are the benefits for non-health organisations in collaborating with primary healthcare?

There is much positive talk of ‘multi-stakeholder collaboration’ and ‘multi-sector working’ and there is certainly value in partnership. Yet these terms can be too broad to be useful as a practical guide for our work.

We aim to stimulate clear thinking and dialogue around potential synergies and partnerships, and to do this we invite you to join a lively discussion led by Primary Care International (PCI) with a diverse panel representing healthcare, academia and civil society (Dr. Sonak Pastakia, Prof David Mant, Andrea Taylor and Dave Prescott).

Panellists

• Dr Sonak Pastakia (Associate Professor, Purdue University, US. He spent the past 10 years working in western Kenya with the AMPATH programme to provide comprehensive population health by designing, implementing, and researching novel multisectoral approaches to service delivery which link the provision of microfinance and agricultural to portable health care delivery. AMPATH is a partner of PCI and a case study of this collaborative effort will be shared at the seminar. He has most recently completed the Jefferson Science Fellowship with the USAID Africa Bureau for Sustainable Development Health Team based in Washington DC).
• Prof David Mant (Emeritus Professor of Primary Care at Oxford and Associate Director of Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals, NHS Trust. He is Chair of PCI’s academic advisory group and will share a view on the academic evidence for what works in multi-sector approaches to tackling NCDs. He is also joint author of the paper being released at the seminar.)
• Dave Prescott (Partnership specialist with over fifteen years’ experience in cross-sector partnership and sustainability, he currently supports strategic communications at The Partnering Initiative. He has recently been working with PCI looking at how multi-sector approaches can help tackle NCD. His work on this has influenced a new PCI blog)
• Andrea Taylor (Senior Research Manager for Innovations in Healthcare and for the recently-launched Global Health Innovation Center at Duke University where she leads the research and knowledge development work.)
